June 2014 marks two centuries since Djordje Sagic, later named George Fisher, officially moved to Philadelphia as the first Serbian immigrant to the USA.
Djordje Sagic fought for the independence of Texas and New Mexico. He was also a customs director, judge and founder of the first Serbian organizations and churches in California.
Sagic was followed by a million Serbs who mainly settled in the Chicago area and Pennsylvania. A huge number of our people became successful and meritorious citizens of America: nine congressmen, six Academy Award winners, four Pulitzer Prize winners and thousands of heroes of the US army. Hundreds of temples of Serbian Orthodox Church were built and they had a prominent part in the preservation of Serbian ethnic and religious identity.
